“My Danny”

About a month ago, I was pleased and honored to have my picture taken with “my Danny,” and to present him with a copy of the book I dedicated to him. This is Jacob Eckert, the man who told me the story of his early life in China, which I fictionalized in my latest historical novel, In a Foreign Land.

Jake has become a hero of mine. In his long life—he is 88 now—he has suffered many things that would have broken or at least discouraged a lesser man. But he carried on. He is wiry, hale and hearty, excited about life, gentle and kind. He speaks English, High German, Low German, Russian, Mandarin, and a smattering of Korean from his time in the Chinese Army during the Korean War. He has a black belt in Karate and still maintains a good sense of balance. And he loves to tell stories.

When my daughters were reading In a Foreign Land, they asked me which parts were true and which were made up. I’ll tell you what I told them: almost every event that happened to Danny and Luise is true, except the romance with Rachel. The characters of Dubrowsky, Phillip and Jasch come from the first book, Other Side of the River. Mi-sook is purely fictional. She was included for interest sake, but also because Jake told me about a colony of Koreans that had been resettled from North Korea to an area west and north of where he lived in northern China.

So if some events in this latest novel sound stranger than fiction, it’s because they are. I have included “the story behind the story” in the back matter of “In a Foreign Land” if you are interested in reading more about Jacob Eckert.

I’m glad I could publish this story independently. It would be a shame for it to have remained unpublished because “it’s too foreign a setting for readers to identify with.” I’ve had that feedback from agents in the past.

I am so thankful to Jake for telling me his story, to my dear friends and colleagues who helped in many ways to make this book better than it was before they read it, and especially to Marcia Laycock at Small Pond Press for her professional edit, Rik Hall at Wild Seas Formatting for his formatting expertise, and Fred Koop at Fred Koop Designs for catching my idea for a cover and making it better than I ever could.

Random Thoughts on the Future

When our middle daughter graduated from high school, we hosted a dry-grad party at our farm. It was great fun, mainly because the graduates took the reins and planned the entire thing, including food donations from local stores.

We had a trampoline, a fire pit surrounded by straw bales, a beach volleyball court, lots of loud music from the rented speakers under the tent, fireworks, a freezer full of ice cream treats, burgers and chips and pop (et cetera), a full breakfast for the hangers-on. It was the best party we ever hosted.

For me, the most memorable part of the party, besides the music, was a balloon release just as the sky began to lighten in the early morning. Each grad received a helium-filled balloon in the color of their choice. Then all the balloons were released at the same time. The sight was very moving. Some balloons stuck together for quite a while, some took off immediately on their own, some wafted here and there, some quickly reached the heights and disappeared. And we all held our breath as we contemplated.

That event is now almost twenty years in the past, and the lives of the grads that gathered that night have been as diverse as the balloons suggested they might be.

What balloons did we release last year? What balloons do you plan to release this year? We can make plans—and we should—but there are only so many things we can control. We have no idea what this year will hold, but we can give it our best shot.

POV — Inspirational Thoughts for a Writer’s Heart

Every fiction story requires one or more points of view, a.k.a. POV. The point of view is the eye through which you see the story. Accordingly, every POV character will see the story differently, depending on his background, current state, emotional situation. Contrasting points of view add interest and tension to the story. They allow for conflict between characters.

My dad used to say, “Don’t judge others; you never know their whole story.” And he was right. Everyone has hidden secrets or situations that contribute to the formation of their perspective. We don’t know what they are or where they come from.

What is our response to perspectives that differ from ours? Do we shut people down if they don’t agree with us? Or do we listen to their “side of the story” and consider where they’re coming from? My dad, wise man that he was, also said, “There are always at least three sides to the story: your side, my side and the truth.”

We can’t help but view life from varied perspectives because none of us have followed exactly the same path. Our view, though distinct from another’s, is not wrong.

I agree that we need to know who we are and what we stand for, but we also need to be aware that others have traveled divergent paths to ours. And they aren’t necessarily where we are.

POV, or perspective, is as important in real life as it in in fiction. Perhaps more so.

Setting — Inspirational Thoughts for a Writer’s Heart

Without setting, our characters float in space, undefined and ungrounded. We need setting to give us a framework in which the characters and the story move.

Some settings are utopian, others fantastical, historical, dystopian (I don’t like those), or contemporary. But every story needs to be grounded in time and place.

Just as our stories are grounded, so are our lives. And silly old saying goes like this: “Wherever you are, there you are.” I know it sounds obvious, but think about it. Everyone has to live somewhere. Some people travel the world, while others, like me, stay pretty close to home most of the time. But wherever we are, there we are.

A more productive adage is: Bloom where you’re planted.

I live on the Canadian prairies. As I write this post, the summer is winding down. My garden is nearly done, and by the time you read this, snow will most likely be upon us. I don’t particularly like snow, and I hate the cold, but this is where I’ve been planted, and it is part of what makes me who I am.

My setting is here, where God has placed me. I want to be faithful and do what I can for Him right here. At least I only have to plant one garden a year, and that’s enough for me!

Conflict — Inspirational Thoughts for the Writer’s Heart

One of the aspects of fiction that gives me the most grief (she says, tongue in cheek) is Conflict.

I hate conflict. I’m a middle child. A peacemaker. When my brother and sister would fight, I’d cry. And here I am trying to make life as miserable as possible for my characters. Mind you, it’s all for a good cause. We need to see these characters face their demons, overcome (or not) and be better (or worse) people for it.

Conflict is a huge part of this life. No one is immune to it. There are conflicts of many kinds that assault us in our lives, and we can’t hide from them.

The connection between fiction and real life here is that if we view conflict as something that is allowed by God in order to make us better, we can see the bigger picture. If the Lord allows it in our lives, He will take us through it.

I’m currently reading Jeremiah. That poor man went through so much strife and suffering, and yet God told him, “I will rescue you.” Note that in order to be rescued, one needs to be in trouble. And in the end, God saved Jeremiah from death and deportation.

Can we trust that God has our best interests in mind? Sometimes our trials might be for the purpose of showing others God’s faithfulness to us through difficulty.

Let’s not let conflict get us down, but rather use it as a springboard to greater spiritual and emotional strength. I can’t get myself to say, “Bring it on!” but I can commit myself to the One who loves me more than any other and will never let me down.
